CMEM + ClaudeSetup guide

Add the Claude Mem connector to Claude.

One connector works in Claude on the web, Claude Desktop and Cowork. Claude can then search your claude-mem memory and save new notes to it. Add the Claude-Mem plugin too, and memory loads and saves by itself as you work.

Before you start

  • A CMEM Pro account with an active subscription or trial. Start here if you don't have one.
  • Memories in CMEM Cloud. If a memory search comes back empty, connect claude-mem to cloud sync first with npx claude-mem install and choose CMEM Pro.
  • Any Claude plan. Custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free plans can add one custom connector.

Which steps you follow depends on your Claude plan. On Free, Pro or Max you add the connector yourself. On Team or Enterprise, an owner adds it once for everyone, then each person connects.

Step 01 · Free, Pro, Max

Add the connector

  1. Open Claude and go to Customize → Connectors.
  2. Select + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it Claude Mem connector and paste the URL https://cmem.ai/api/mcp. Select Continue.
  4. On the sign-in screen, choose Sign in now.
  5. For the OAuth client, keep Use Claude's published identity (Recommended). Leave any client ID and secret fields empty.
  6. Select Add. A cmem.ai window opens. Go to step 2.
Step 01 · Team, Enterprise

An owner adds it, then each person connects

For the owner (Owner, Primary Owner, or on Enterprise a role that can manage connectors):

  1. Open Organization settings → Connectors.
  2. Select Add, point to Custom, then choose Web.
  3. Name it Claude Mem connector, paste https://cmem.ai/api/mcp, and select Continue.
  4. Keep Use Claude's published identity (Recommended) and select Add.

For everyone else:

  1. Open Customize → Connectors.
  2. Find Claude Mem connector (it has a Custom label) and select Connect.

Each person signs in with their own cmem.ai account and only sees their own memory. Adding the connector doesn't share anyone's memory with the organization.

Step 02

Sign in to cmem.ai and allow access

  1. Sign in with the same CMEM account your claude-mem memories sync to.
  2. The cmem.ai screen asks you to allow Claude to read your CMEM memory and save notes. It lists both: search and read your synced memory, and save new notes (it can't change or delete existing ones).
  3. Select Allow. The window closes and Claude shows the connector as connected.

No API key, sync token or header is needed. You approve access in the cmem.ai window, so nothing secret ever goes into a chat.

Step 03

Use it in a chat or in Cowork

  1. Start a new chat or Cowork task.
  2. Select + at the lower left of the message box, then Connectors, and make sure Claude Mem connector is turned on.
  3. Ask about your past work:
Search my Claude Mem memory for recent work on [project name] and summarize the latest decisions.

To save something for later sessions:

Save a note to Claude Mem: we chose Postgres over SQLite for the sync server because of concurrent writes.

The same connector works in Claude on the web, Claude Desktop and Cowork once it's added, so you only set it up once. Connectors you add through a local config file on your computer don't show up in Cowork or on the web, so use this custom connector instead.

Optional · Automatic memory

Add the plugin so memory works by itself

The connector works when Claude decides to use it. The Claude-Mem plugin adds hooks: small scripts Claude runs at set moments, so you don't have to ask.

  • When a conversation starts, it loads the memory that fits your first message.
  • While Claude works, it sends each step to CMEM, which turns it into notes for later.
  • When Claude hands work to a helper agent, it gives that agent the memory it needs.

Where the hooks run

  • New Claude conversations and Cowork tasks, on the web, Claude Desktop and mobile. Since Claude combined chat and Cowork, a new conversation runs as a Cowork session, and Cowork runs plugin hooks.
  • Claude Code, where the plugin arrives on its own once it's on your account. If claude-mem is already installed on that computer, the plugin stays quiet there so nothing is saved twice.
  • Not in older chat-only conversations, or where your account hasn't moved to the combined Claude yet. Those skip hooks, so use the connector there.
  • Plugins need a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.

Set it up

  1. On CMEM Connect, choose Claude, then select Download your plugin. You get claude-mem-cowork.zip with your key already inside.
  2. In Claude, open Customize → Plugins, select Add, then Upload plugin, and choose that file.
  3. Start a new conversation. Memory loads at the start and your work saves as you go.

Nothing to copy or paste. The file holds your key, so keep it to yourself. If you added the plugin before, uninstall the old copy first so only one is running. If you generate a new link on CMEM Connect, download the plugin again and upload the new file.

How the plugin and the connector fit together

  • Plugin (hooks): automatic. Loads memory at the start and saves your work as you go.
  • Connector: on request. Claude searches deeper or saves a specific note when you ask.
  • Use both. The plugin keeps memory flowing without you thinking about it, and the connector is there when you want to look something up or save something on purpose.

What it can do

  • Search and read the memories in the CMEM account you signed in with: observations, session summaries, timelines and project lists.
  • Save new notes. Claude can add a note to your memory when you ask. It can't change or delete existing memories. Text wrapped in <private> tags is dropped, and common secret formats like API keys and tokens are blanked out. Plain-text passwords aren't always caught, so don't save them; wrap anything you want kept out in <private> tags.
  • Generated answers are off unless you allow them. They use your CMEM monthly allowance, so Claude has to ask for that permission separately.
  • The connector alone doesn't record your work. Only notes Claude saves with it are added. For automatic saving, add the plugin above.

You can block any single tool, such as saving notes, by setting it to Blocked under Customize → Connectors. For how CMEM handles your data, read our privacy policy.

If something doesn't work

I connected before, and Claude says it can read but can't save

Older connections only asked to read. Remove the connector in Customize → Connectors and add it again, then select Allow on the new screen that includes saving notes. Claude doesn't let you edit a connector's sign-in, so removing and re-adding is the way to update it.

I can't find Add custom connector

On Team or Enterprise, only an owner can add it. Ask them to follow the work plan steps above, then select Connect on it yourself. On Free, you may already have used your one custom connector.

The sign-in fails or asks for keys

Check the URL is exactly https://cmem.ai/api/mcp, keep Use Claude's published identity, and leave client ID and secret empty. Sign in with the CMEM account that has your active Pro subscription or trial. If you closed the window, start again.

Opening the URL in a browser tab shows “Unauthorized”. That's expected: it only answers connectors that have signed in.

It's connected but Claude doesn't use it

Turn it on for the chat from + → Connectors, and name it in your request, for example “search my Claude Mem memory for…”.

Searches come back empty

Check the computer running claude-mem shows up to date under Synced devices on your account page. If it doesn't, finish cloud sync first; older local history isn't uploaded automatically. If it does, check Claude is signed in to the same CMEM account.

Still stuck? Email support@cmem.ai with the step that failed and the error text. Keep keys and private memory out of screenshots.

Disconnect whenever you want

  • In Claude: open Customize → Connectors and remove Claude Mem connector. Owners remove it for everyone in Organization settings → Connectors.
  • In CMEM: open Connected apps and select Revoke next to Claude.

Disconnecting stops new requests. It doesn't delete your memories or anything already shown in a Claude chat.
